Fleas Driving Your Dog Crazy? 4 Things To Try Before You Call The Vet

Fleas are annoying little creatures that attack your dog. If left untreated, fleas can chew at your dog's tender skin, leaving sores behind. Before you head to the veterinarian for expensive treatments, take a look at some of the do-it-yourself tricks you can use to get rid of the fleas that are on your dog.

Supplement with Brewer's Yeast

Brewer's yeast is a natural dietary supplement that works well at repelling fleas. Brewer's yeast can be added right to your dog's food. Simply add about a teaspoon of the supplement to your dog's food once a day. As an added benefit, the brewer's yeast also works well to keep your dog's fur nice and shiny.

Add Garlic

Adding garlic to your dog's food will also prevent fleas. The pungent smell of garlic lingers long after it's eaten. Fleas are repelled by the aroma. To keep fleas off your dogs, crush a clove of garlic and place it in the food. You only need to feed garlic to your dog a few times a week to keep the fleas away. If you're having a hard time getting your dog to eat garlic flavored dog food, simply hide the garlic inside a treat and feed it to your dog.

Make It Vinegar Water

If you don't want to bother with placing supplements in your dog's food, you can add it to their water instead. Place a ¼ teaspoon of vinegar in your dog's water once a day. The vinegar won't harm your dog and it won't alter the taste of the water. In addition to fighting fleas, vinegar will also repel ticks, which is important if your dog spends a lot of time outside.

Spritz with Lemon Juice

This method will repel fleas and leave your dog smelling lemon fresh. For this treatment, you'll need a few items.

Supplies You'll Need

  • One large lemon

  • 1 quart of water

  • Spray bottle

  • Small pan

  1. Boil 1 quart of water.

  2. Cut your lemon into small pieces and place them in the pan of boiling water.

  3. Allow the water to boil for about 30 minutes.

  4. Remove the pan from the heat and leave the water to cool overnight.

  5. Be sure to leave the lemon pieces in the water.

  6. Pour the water into your spray bottle.

  7. Spritz your dog with the lemon water.

  8. The water will repel fleas all day.

  9. Spray your dog every morning.
